Updated: Thursday, March 27 2014, 09:03 AM EDT

Rochester, N.Y. -- Two cancer research facilities in Western New York have been awarded research grants from the Breast Cancer Coalition of Rochester.

Each grant totals $50,000. The first is going to the University of Rochester Medical Center, for its research focusing on targeting specific breast cancer cells.

Roswell Park in Buffalo will also receive a grant to investigate how a specific protein could suppress breast cancer tumors.

Spokespersons from both facilities said it's an immense relief to receive the grants.

"It's absolutely wonderful to receive (this grant) at a time when all scientists are really fighting for their scientific lives," said Helene McMurray, Ph.D. at URMC.

The coalition has given more than $480,000 in grants since 2003.
