Medical marijuana vote could come this week

Updated: Monday, June 16 2014, 05:30 PM EDT

ALBANY, N.Y. - Lawmakers in Albany hope to have a deal in place to allow medical marijuana in New York State.

An agreement between the state Senate and Assembly is due before midnight Monday in order to be voted on before the legislative session ends later this week.

Negotiations between the Cuomo administration and bill sponsors Sen. Diane Savino and Assemblyman Richard Gottfried began on Friday for the Compassionate Care Act.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo has said he would sign the law into effect, as long as the measure "makes sense," and includes proper regulation of the drug.

The measure would allow patients with one of 20 diseases to be administered marijuana under the supervision of a health care professional.
