Canandaigua, N.Y. -- A new study being done at the Canandaigua’s Veterans Affairs Center is looking at ways to reduce stress for female veterans.

The eight week program started this past summer thanks to a grant. The program is about helping female veterans develop a healthy mind, body, and soul.

Finding a proper channel of stress is what researcher Autumn Gallegos says can make a difference in a person’s life.

The program offers two hour sessions every week where women are evaluated and focus on meditation.

For military veterans, Brenda Vorhees and Stacey Markum, they say the techniques used have made remarkable differences in their lives.

“I’m more mindful,” says Vorhees. “Whether you’re driving or eating a meal, you can incorporate that in part of your everyday life.”

“Even in the first class when we were mediating my pain went away during that time,” says Markum. “Learning my mindfulness techniques, I was able to incorporate that at work and at home with my daughter.”

“My biggest hope is that women can tap into, come home post deployment and connect to internal resources,” says Gallegos. “They have to really live their life and be fully alive in any moment”

The medical center will also study women who have experiences sexual trauma in the military. That program starts in the Spring.
