Study: U.S. could do more to prevent HPV

Updated: Monday, February 10 2014, 08:02 AM EST

Bethesda, Md. -- New numbers suggest the U.S. isn’t doing enough to protect Americans from cervical and throat cancer.

A report from the President’s Cancer Panel said only one-third of girls eligible for the HPV vaccine have gotten the full three doses, and only 7 percent of boys have been vaccinated.

The report found that by raising those vaccination rates to 80 percent, nearly 53,000 cervical cancer cases could be prevented in girls today.

The HPV vaccine has been available since 2006.
