Study: yellow dyes cause concern

Updated: Monday, February 24 2014, 12:24 PM EST

New Brunswick, N.Y. - A new study at Rutgers University found that yellow dyes found in common household products could contain a potentially harmful chemical that is toxic to your health.

According to Lisa Rodenburg, an associate Professor in Environmental Chemistry at Rutgers, the chemical is PBC 11 and can be found in yellow dyes in printing inks, paper and paint as well as clothing.

Researchers said they need to conduct further study on the toxicity of PCB 11. However, previous studies linked PCBs with irritations, cancer, birth defects, developmental problems in children and even bad acne.

Rodenburg said on "Good Morning America" that there's enough evidence from the specific PCB 11 that it should be further investigated.
