UR research could help detect rare cancer

Updated: Wednesday, March 5 2014, 07:27 AM EST

Rochester, N.Y. -- University of Rochester researchers have developed a gene test to diagnose a rare bone marrow cancer they said is difficult to detect.

The test can help detect myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), also known as pre-leukemia. It can be difficult to diagnose, and can often be confused with other illnesses.

MDS gained increased attention after Good Morning America anchor Robin Roberts was diagnosed with it in 2012.
