URMC researching e-cigarettes

Updated: Friday, August 8 2014, 05:46 PM EDT

Rochester, N.Y. – How e-cigarettes are eventually regulated could be partially determined by a study being done at the University of Rochester Medical Center.

The URMC received a $2.1-milllion grant to research e-cigarettes that started on August 1st.

“How they compare to regular cigarettes at the cellular and molecular level with a particular emphasis on how that may impact the health of newborns and children,” said Tom Mariani, Ph.D. Associate Professor of Pediatrics, Medicine and Environmental Medicine at URMC. “We're trying to be relatively open-minded and just assess the responses and the risk associated with those responses in the context of the disease risks we're aware of with traditional cigarettes.”

Some vapor shop owners see this research as a positive.

“The more studies the better as far as we're concerned, we don't want a lot of speculation, I've seen a fair amount of unfounded speculation,” said Jeffrey Bouman, who just opened Three Days Vapes, a vapor shop in the village of Fairport.

Bouman was a cigarette smoker for decades before making the change to e-cigarettes.

“From my personal experience, not speaking for anyone else, I use to be a very heavy smoker for 20 years and soon as I switched to this I did feel better,” he said.

The study is supported by the National Institutes of Health and the FDA, which is looking for a scientific basis before deciding how to regulate e-cigarettes.

The grant is for the next five years.
