URMC: Student with measles, not contagious

Rochester, N.Y. - A student at the University of Rochester has been treated for measles, according to a spokesperson for the university, but is no longer contagious.

According to a memo from the New York State Department of Health, he has recovered.

The University of Rochester Medical Center is in the process of notifying others who may have been in contact with the student and thus exposed to measles.

For most, this is not considered a major health risk so long as they have been vaccinated for the disease.

Measles is considered a highly contagious disease caused by a virus, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It causes runny nose, rash all over the body, fever and can cause death, according to the CDC.

As a precaution, anyone who may have been in the following areas during these times may be contacted by the Monroe Co. Health department, or can call 585-275-0301:

• The Emergency Department waiting room from Jan. 31 at 10:09 p.m. until February 1 at 1:41 a.m.
• In the Emergency Department ADULT treatment areas between Jan. 31 at 10:41 p.m. and Feb. 1 at 10:22 p.m.
• In the Extended Observation unit between Feb. 1 at 7:22 p.m. and Feb. 3 at 9:45 a.m.

Hospital staff with questions about their immunization status are asked to call 275-8181.
