Geneseo, N.Y. -- Two months after authorities discovered the remains of Marcia Flemke, her husband took responsibility for her death.
In an expected move by the 61-year-old Hemlock resident, Gary Flemke pleaded guilty to murder and tampering with evidence charges in Livingston County court.
"I didn't want to see my wife's family suffer," said Flemke as he was escorted to jail.
He didn't explain why he chose to kill his wife.
"I think the incident in itself was a moment of passion," said Marcea Clark Tetamore, Flemke's public defender. "I think it was a perfect storm if you will of all of the events in his life and he just snapped."
District Attorney Greg McCaffrey said there was a series of angry text messages between the couple prior to Marcia Flemke's death.
"We talked about going to trial and there might have been some defenses; they may have been successful or not successful," explained Tetamore. "Part of that is waiting probably 6-8 months before we can get on the trial calendar, and his step sons might have to testify, her friends would have to testify, he could testify. That was prolonging the healing process for the family."
Robert Flemke is scheduled to be sentenced on July 1.
He faces 20 years to life in prison.
