Local church program targets graduation rates

Updated: Thursday, October 10 2013, 08:22 PM EDT

Rochester, N.Y. –Bishop David Singleton of Arc of Jesus Ministries believes in investing in his community, particularly young children.

The church’s, “Help Me Read,” program works with children at school number 17 in the Rochester City School District.

The goal is to work with children while they’re young, hoping to boost graduation rates.

“To me the graduation rate was totally unacceptable and I felt rather than throw stones at the teachers and administrators, that I ought to jump in and make a difference,” Singleton said.

At least 12 volunteers have also jumped in to help. Singleton hopes to add at least 50 more volunteers and expand to other schools in the district.

“I believe we can do more together than we do a part and as we, the general community and populous who care, and I believe there are a multiple, a number of people who care, to make a favorable impact of our students,” Singleton said.

Tutors work one-on-one with students from kindergarten to sixth grade.

The program has been in place for five years.
