URMC Purchases Lakeside Hospital, Newly Renamed Strong West

Updated: Friday, July 12 2013, 05:41 PM EDT

Brockport, N.Y. –The University of Rochester Medical Center announced Tuesday it will purchase Lakeside Hospital, two months after the hospital closed its doors to patients.

With the purchase, Lakeside will become the newly named URMC's Strong West. The Medical Center plans to restore outpatient services at the Brockport hospital, and establish an urgent care center as early as August. There are also plans to reestablish laboratory and imaging services.

In a statement, President and CEO of Rochester General Health System Mark Clement said, "In the face of health care reform, mergers and acquisitions among health care providers will continue, as systems strive to address patients’ needs while making care more affordable. We wish URMC the best as it re-institutes some clinical programs on the Lakeside Hospital campus to serve the Brockport community.”

Two months ago, when the hospital's doors closed, it left many people's careers in limbo. 13WHAM News spoke to a former Lakeside Hospital employee who will likely apply to URMC's Strong West.

"It's been a little depressing, because there hasn't been a lot of openings in other places," former employee Deborah Klink said.

URMC CEO Bradford Berk said he'd welcome people like Klink in the new urgent care center. He said it would be possible need about 90 employees at the new center.

Financial details were not released, however 13WHAM has learned that URMC will not assume the $5.1 million debt held by Lakeside.
