Rochester, M.Y. -- Rochester's city school district is starting out the school year by setting a challenge. They want 95 percent attendance on the first day.
The district has been dealing with thousands of chronically absent students last year.
The goal will focus on 13 schools with an absentee rate of 42 percent for kids in Kindergarten through grade three.
"If kids are in school, the likelihood of them having higher academic achievement is very high. So our goal, not only on day one, is 95 percent," says Jerome Underwood, Director of Youth Development and Family Services.
To help get kids to school, the district is looking for volunteers to give rides to children until their bus schedules are worked out.
