Mendon, N.Y. - Judy Davis and her husband have fond memories of Mendon Ponds Park. Their wedding reception was at Stewart Lodge.
Last Friday, the couple drove to Mendon to reminisce. They left the car for a half-hour.
“We got back to the car [and] the window was smashed,” said Davis.
Davis has left her purse in plain sight.
“A stupid mistake on our part, and I didn’t think about the fact the purse was visible and bam, they went right through the window,” Davis explained.
A Good Samaritan found her purse in another park and returned it to Davis.
“It made me feel excellent to have my license back in my possession,” Davis said.
There have been six such incidents at Mendon Ponds Park this month and one in Rush, according to Corporal John Helfer, spokesman for the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.
“I used to think the worst problem was the ticks in the park for the dogs and now I'm not feeling very safe when I come to the park,” said Cheryl Waldman of Pittsford
Waldman had a purse stolen from her car two years ago at the same park. Wednesday, it happened again. The purse was hidden, but that did not matter.
“When I came back to the car, I actually opened the other door,” said Waldman. “I could see all the glass on the seat.”
She replaced the broken window Friday, but damage to the window frame remains.
The sheriff’s office has not made an arrest in the burglaries and declined requests for on-camera interviews.
The police investigation continues, according to Helfer.
