Could pro golf return to Rochester?

Updated: Thursday, August 28 2014, 09:36 AM EDT

Gates, N.Y. - Less than a month after the last LPGA tournament was hosted in Rochester, plans to bring pro golf back to our area next year, are already in the works.

The LPGA owned Symetra Tour, the "minor league" of women's golf, could be coming to the Brook-Lea Country Club in Gates.

A letter sent to the country club's members states the club has received a preliminary proposal to host the tournament.

The tournament would be a regular stop on the tour that had 20 events this year with purses ranging from $100,000 to $200,000.

It would be named the "Danielle Downey Classic" after a local golfer killed in an accident earlier this year. It would be held July 13-19, 2015.

Mike Nichols, Chief Business Officer of the Symetra Tour sent us the following statement:

“The Symetra Tour is always seeking new communities to host the future stars of the LPGA Tour. Given the support the community has shown to women’s golf for nearly 40 years, there is no doubt a Symetra Tour event in Rochester would immediately become one of the strongest tournaments of the season in its first year. That said, in order to have a successful tournament we need to identify a golf course, tournament-organizing group and title sponsor – among other things. At the moment, none of those pieces are in place, and realistically, to add an event to our schedule for 2015, we’d need to have those details finalized within the next 60 days.”
