Kiko Alonso upbeat while rehabbing knee

Updated: Tuesday, September 2 2014, 03:20 PM EDT

Orchard Park, N.Y. (AP) -- Buffalo Bills linebacker Kiko Alonso is walking with only a slight limp and hopes his surgically repaired left knee will return to normal after rehab.

Alonso called the injury a "huge disappointment" because it's likely to sideline him for the entire season. He spoke Tuesday for the first time since tearing a ligament during a workout in Oregon two months ago.

Alonso says he felt something after changing direction on the field but didn't realize the severity of the damage. He waited a few days before tests revealed the ligament was torn.

The second-round draft pick was an NFL defensive rookie of the year contender last year. He led Buffalo with 159 tackles, two fumble recoveries and tied for the team lead with four interceptions.
