Maplewood neighbors worried about violence

Rochester, N.Y. -- Some residents of Rochester’s Maplewood neighborhood have expressed safety concerns after a violent weekend in that neighborhood.
Police said a man in his 30s was shot to death on a porch on Clay Avenue Saturday night, one night after reports of shots fired and fights breaking out at a house party about one block away.
Police have not released the victim’s name or a motive in Saturday’s shooting. That uncertainty is why several neighbors are worried.
"Well it was almost surreal; it was like it couldn't happen here or in this neighborhood,” said Sister Elaine Englert, who lives in the neighborhood. “Kind of like an explosion, but we could realize it was shots of some sort and it wasn't like a pop, pop, it was like a bang, bang, bang, bang, like four times."
Maplewood residents said they hope to get answers from police at a neighborhood meeting Wednesday night.
“We haven’t had a lot of homicides in Maplewood,” said Bill Collins, president of the Maplewood Neighborhood Association. “We tend to be a pretty safe neighborhood, by and large.”
