Irondequoit, N.Y. -- Pay up or lose your tax breaks — that is the message that has been delivered by government leaders to Medley Centre owner Scott Congel.
“This cycle of him breaking his commitments and not paying the money that's due to the town the county and the schools is over," said Irondequoit Town Supervisor Adam Bello. "We need to draw a line in the sand and let him know that that's not going to continue anymore."
Congel’s Bersin Properties LLC had until Monday to pay $3,870,304.22 in supplemental and annual payments to taxing jurisdictions of Irondequoit, Monroe County and the East Irondequoit School District, Bello said.
Congel, the town, county and school district entered into a payment-in-lieu-of-taxes agreement several years ago, though Congel has missed many of the payments, leaders said.
“In the long run, we are in better shape by enforcing this agreement, and if he's unable to go forward allowing the community to go on with what's next then we are to have crisis after crisis after crisis every time there's money due,” said John Abbott, deputy superintendent for East Irondequoit schools.
Congel’s representatives did not return several messages left seeking comment.
The taxing jurisdictions gave Congel until May 1 to pay what is due, after which time they will seek to take away the tax breaks.
