Stewart racing seen as a good thing

Updated: Friday, August 29 2014, 05:46 PM EDT

Canandaigua, N.Y. - In his first public comments since the accident that killed Kevin Ward Jr. Tony Stewart says it will "affect his life forever."

Stewart announced Thursday that he will race this weekend in Atlanta, his first race since the fatal accident in Canandaigua, N.Y.

The father of a woman injured in a race car crash that involved Stewart last year says he's glad Stewart is going to race this weekend.

"I saw on Facebook that Tony was going to go back racing and the first thing I thought was it was awesome," said Ruggles. "I grew up racing and I've taken some crazy spills through the years and for some reason your heart tells you to get back in it and go racing."

In a brief press conference Tony Stewart echoed a similar feeling.

"I think being back in the car with my racing family will help me get through this difficult time," said Stewart.

Ruggles hopes Stewart's decision to race will continue to help everyone, including the racing community move forward.

"It's tough that we had something happen like that but you know this is what we do, we race when unfortunate circumstances happen you know it's just great news to see Tony try to get back in the car and do what he does," said Ruggles.

Ruggles has never blamed Stewart for the accident that injured his daughter. He said Stewart has always been very respectful to his family.
