The importance of Pre-K

Updated: Tuesday, September 2 2014, 09:22 AM EDT

Rochester, N.Y. – This week marks the start of the first full year for full-day pre-kindergarten in Rochester.

The city school district received state funding for the program earlier this year.

Parents are embracing the opportunity to get their children into the routine of going to school.

According to Rochester City School District board member Malik Evans, pre-k will lay the foundation for kids to want to continue on and go to school. Introducing kids to school early makes it a normal part of their lives.

“We know that if a child starts earlier, the chances of success are excellent. They have a chance of graduating high school, be productive citizens and there’s plenty of young people who have gone to pre-kindergarten that have shown they have great gains throughout their career,” said Evans.

Around 3,100 kids in the city qualify for pre-k. Over 2,000 were enrolled last school year and this year the district expects enrollment to exceed 90-percent.

Pre-K starts on September 3 but parents have until October 1 to register.

Tune in to Good Day Rochester all this week, 4:30 a.m. to 7 a.m. on ABC, 6:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. on Fox for everything back to school!
