Updated: Tuesday, September 10 2013, 11:44 PM EDT

Rochester, N.Y.-- Registered Democrats voting in the primary election chose Lovely Warren to run as the Democratic nominee for mayor on Tuesday.

Warren will run on the democratic line against Green Party Candidate Alex White in November. Incumbent Mayor Thomas Richards will still appear on the Working Families Party Line & Independence Party Line in November.

Warren defeated Richards with 58 percent of the vote. Richards received 42 percent of the vote. Five districts are still not reporting.

A close look at the campaign finance filings of each candidate showed the Richards campaign raising and spending big money on this race. Since January Richards reports raising nearly $300,000

The Warren campaign entered this political race knowing it would operate at a grassroots level. Her campaign account began the year with about $20,000 and she has since raised around $74,000 according to filings.

Richards was sworn in as mayor on April 11, 2011 after a special election decided who would succeed former Mayor Robert J. Duffy, who became Lieutenant Governor.

"I don't feel like we left a lot unturned here," Richards said in a speech Tuesday night at his election headquarters. "We were disappointed in the turnout and that hurt us."
