Lovely Warren wins race for Rochester Mayor

Updated: Tuesday, November 5 2013, 10:58 PM EST

Rochester, N.Y.-- City Council President Lovely Warren has defeated Incumbent Tom Richards, and Green Party Candidate Alex White in the race for Rochester Mayor.

The win comes after Warren defeated Richards during the primary in September.

Within a week of the primary, Richards ended his campaign, and endorsed Warren.

During this time Richards’ son passed away after a long battle with cancer and the mayor has kept a low public profile since.

Yet, Richards remained on the November ballot thanks to previous nominations on the Independence and Working Families Party ballot lines. Independent groups such as the “Turn Out For Tom” campaign supported Richards’ re-election even though the Mayor stopped campaigning.

On the other hand, the Democratic Party showed continued support for Warren after the primary.

“She [Warren] won a clear and resounding victory in the Democratic Primary, she will be the next Mayor of Rochester and we are eagerly looking forward to the new administration," the Monroe County Democratic Committee Chairman Joseph Morelle said in a statement last month.

Warren was the clear underdog in September.

A close look at the campaign finance filings of each candidate ahead of the primary showed the Richards campaign raising and spending big money on the race. Since January, Richards reports raising nearly $300,000. The Warren campaign entered this political race knowing it would operate at a grassroots level. Her campaign account began the year with about $20,000 and she has since raised around $74,000 according to filings.

White received 5 percent of Tuesday’s vote.
