Tom Doughtery is new Livingston County Sheriff

Updated: Tuesday, November 5 2013, 11:34 PM EST

Livingston County, N.Y. - Livingston County has a new sheriff for the first time in almost a quarter century.

Conservative candidate Undersheriff Jim Szczesniak conceded the race to Republican sheriff’s office investigator Tom Dougherty.

A faulty memory card slowed the results of the race. Officials had to count votes by hand and only completed 33 of 122 districts by 11:30 p.m.

Szczesniak conceded after exit polls showed Doughtery won by a margin of about 600 votes

Doughtery replaces Livingston County Sheriff John York after 24 years in office.

York will be retiring in February.

Tuesday’s vote was a rematch of a very close -- hotly contested primary race.
