Rochester, N.Y. -- A 16-year-old East High School student claims she was beaten repeatedly by another student, in a classroom, over a computer.
Josie Cannioto was treated at an urgent care facility and later a local hospital. She suffered a concussion and bruising on her face, around her eye and on one shoulder.
A spokesperson for the Rochester City School District acknowledged the incident which happened during an in-school-suspension, on Wednesday. According to Cannioto, she is in suspension for poor grades and skipping classes due to harassment- she says at the hands of other students.
"She was touching my hair, touching my shoulder and she was like, 'you have to get off the computer,'" said Cannioto. "I was like, 'no, I have permission to be on the computer.'"
Cannioto said a verbal fight ensued, the other student was asked to leave the room, but later returned—and began striking Cannioto.
"As a parent, I am very angry and I feel that the school failed to protect my child," said Wanetta Cannioto.
Josie Cannioto said a classmate took cell phone video of the incident which was later posted to YouTube. The video is fuzzy, and appears to show Cannioto getting punched by another female student.
In a statement to 13WHAM News, RCSD said the following:
There was a physical altercation yesterday between two students at East High School, in an in-school suspension classroom. Adults broke up the situation quickly, and no one was injured. The School Resource Officer filed a police report, citing one of the students for harassment, and the school is taking appropriate disciplinary action. The District will not release the names of the students.
