Rochester, N.Y. (WHAM) - Three adults and two children safely escaped a house fire early Wednesday morning on Thurston Road.

The Rochester Fire Department says the fire at 360 Thurston Road started about 4:20 a.m. The five inside were alerted thanks to working smoke detectors.

The building is "mixed use" - with a business on the first floor and a residence above it. Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire in just over an hour

The fire department says two dogs did not survive. They are still investigating the cause and working to determine the total amount of fire damage. The worst of the fire was on the first floor.

The Red Cross is helping the five people who escaped the fire.
