Bloomberg: Tops, Winn-Dixie reportedly filing for bankruptcy
(WHAM) - A recent Bloomberg report states that the owners of Tops Friendly Markets and Winn-Dixie are preparing to file for bankruptcy.
The report states that the owner of Tops Friendly Markets could potentially seek court protection from creditors as soon as this month, according to people familiar with the situation.
It's unclear what exactly the changes could mean for the store chain, but some shoppers worry it could result in closures.
That concern is especially high in places like Avon, where stores like Tops are the only option for grocery shopping.
"This is a regular store stop for me," said Sandi Willsey, who lives in nearby Lima.
"In this area, what other choices do you have," asked Willsey. "The nearest grocery store would be in Livonia or Honeoye Falls, or you'd have to go to Geneseo."
Willsey said she shops at Tops locations throughout the Rochester area. She says the report Saturday about potential bankruptcy surprised her.
"It doesn't make sense, because the stores seem to be busy, people coming and purchasing products, I don't know, I'm just shocked."
Other shoppers, like Avon resident Dana Dechau, agree with Willsey, saying the Tops store is heavily relied on by residents.
"It's close, it's not expensive to shop here, so it's convenient for everyone to come here," said Dechau.
"If the Tops in Avon closed I think that'd be a hard hit for folks," added Willsey.
Meanwhile, Bi-Lo LLC, the company behind the Winn-Dixie chain, is reportedly preparing for a bankruptcy filing as soon as March.
