Community in Irondequoit eager to bring community center to former mall
Irondequoit, N.Y. (WHAM) - Irondequoit's former mall is currently home to nearly one million square feet of unused space, but that is set to change in the coming months, with the community's help.
According to town officials, Irondequoit is the highest-populated town in Monroe County without a community center.
But Angelo Ingrassia, the new owner of the former Irondequoit Mall, is letting the town use 50,000-sq.-ft. of the space for a new community center.
Ingrassia is now referring to the property as 'Skyview on the Ridge.'
Thursday night, the public had a chance to let town officials know what they'd like to have inside that new community center, which many say is a need in the town.
"We don't have a (YMCA), you have to go over across the Bay or whatever, and we have a L.A. Fitness, but they’re looking more for a sense a community, having a place to go, having a wellness center, a gymnasium, meeting space, things like that," said resident Joanne Coast.
Many of the residents at Thursday's meeting say the former Medley Center is the perfect location for a community center, given its location to highways and ease of access. Those residents also aren't concerned with any issues, like crime, that used to be associated with the mall.
"There were problems initially as a Mall. That’s yesterday’s problem, you’re going to always have problems but you can build solutions to those problems. So I think it’s going to be a great venue," said resident Greg Taylor.
Town officials hope to have plans for the new community center finalized by February 2018.
