Portland Ave apartment building destroyed in fire, set to be demolished
Rochester, N.Y. (WHAM) - An apartment building on Portland Avenue will be demolished later Thursday after a fire destroyed it in the early morning.
It started Thursday morning around 7:10. The building was located between Roycroft Drive and Lux Street.
A portion of Portland Avenue, near Clifford Avenue was closed while crews work to put out the fire. A second alarm had to be sounded eight minutes after the first crews arrived on scene because of how close the neighboring houses were and how quickly the fire was spreading.
As the building became more unstable, the Rochester Fire Department was forced to pull its 50 firefighters out of the building and fight the fire from the outside.
As of 8:47 a.m. the fire was under control - more than an hour and a half after it was first reported.
There are eight apartments in the house, and roughly 20 people living there. There were no smoke detectors in the building, according to firefighters.
Crews say no one was sent to the hospital and there is no word yet on a cause.
The building was declared a loss and is scheduled to be demolished.
