Harry Potter sport 'Quidditch' flies into Henrietta
Henrietta, N.Y. - A new sport has flown into town with a funny name and a familiar origin.
Those familiar with J.K. Rowling's “Harry Potter” series know about Quidditch, which involves players flying around on brooms trying to catch the golden snitch.
Sunday, the Rochester Whiteout faced off against the Detroit Innovators.
Major League Quidditch adapted the game so muggles could play, incorporating elements from basketball, rugby and dodgeball.
"It was founded to provide an outlet for people to play in the summer, but also to step up the professionalism of a game that is otherwise relatively unknown and relatively young,” said Rick Wasser, manager of the Detroit Innovators. “This was the first big step towards mainstream sports media and you know branding.”
Major League Quidditch was founded in the summer of 2015 and is the highest level of competitive Quidditch in the world.
