Health of baby abandoned in garbage bag improving immensely

The district attorney in Chemung County told 13WHAM the 8-month old was released from the hospital Friday, but it's unclear who has custody.

Elmira, N.Y. - The health of the baby discovered in a trash bag in Elmira is improving remarkably well.

The district attorney in Chemung County told 13WHAM the 8-month old's condition is improving. She has been moved out of Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, but is still at the hospital.

Physicians said the baby is in great condition and is "remarkably robust," despite initially suffering from dehydration.

The baby's 17-year-old mother Harriette Hoyt of Sayre, Pennsylvania, faces attempted murder charges.

Police said she abandoned her daughter for at least three days in a garbage bag behind a house. Neighbors ended up finding the child and quickly alerted authorities.
