Lilac Festival begins with world record attempt

The Lilac Festival opens today with an attempt at a world record for hugging.

The largest free festival of its kind in the U.S. begins Friday, May 12th, featuring ten days worth of activities.

Hours are 10:30 a.m. - 8:30 p.m. each day.

Day 1 opens with an attempt at a world record - 1,800 are expected to create "The Hurlbut Hug" - the largest hug relay. The current Guinness record is held by 1,290 people in Mexico City.

The festival this year has a new security policy - children 16 years of age and younger will have to be accompanied by an adult 21 or older.
