Greece, N.Y. (WHAM) - While many Americans were still asleep Saturday morning, some woke up extra early to watch the royal wedding, including a native of England.

Bernie Flemming wanted to celebrate the start of a new day for the British Monarchy as Prince Harry and Meghan Markle exchanged vows. She decided to throw a royal wedding viewing party.

Flemming said she's been preparing for the party for several weeks from the decorations – such as a life-size Harry and Meghan cutout and flag - to the food.

Flemming made many of the British traditions, including scones, cucumber sandwiches and a fruit cake she said takes nearly six and a half hours to bake.

The fruit cake was just one of the traditions Flemming noticed was missing from Prince Harry and Markle's big day.

"Buckingham Palace - where they stand on the balcony and the royal family is there and the bride and groom kiss - we didn't see that,” said Flemming. "It wasn't my favorite ceremony. I have to say that. It was lovely, but I thought there was just too much going on."

A couple dozen close family and friends donned British hats, or fascinators. They thought the royal wedding was more relatable.

"It reminded me of my wedding, and how we did that,” said friend Tina Annucci as she commented on the giggling couple. “It made you feel like it was more realistic, not so phony.”

Many of the guests were surprised by some of the day's details, including the simplicity of Markle's wedding dress.

"I thought the dress was pretty simple,” Annucci said. “I guess I wasn't expecting that. I liked it though. I really liked her cathedral veil. I thought that was really pretty."

Flemming agreed.

"She was gorgeous and I loved her tiara,” she said. “I thought she was very elegant.”

The ceremony had a mix of British and American traditions from the music to the nuptials and rings.

"They’re from two different worlds, but coming together," said Sherry Rock, another friend.

Rock said the hope is for lasting love.

"Like his mother said, find someone you love and stay with them,” she said. “That was Princess Diana's words to her sons."

Prince Harry and Markle will now be known as the Duke and Duchess of Suxxex.
