Mom helps others become mothers
Rochester, N.Y. - With Mother’s Day weekend here, the holiday is also a chance to honor mothers who help other women become moms.
Lindsey Kowal, a nurse at Highland Hospital, is also a mother.
She says her role helping women through the life-changing transition of giving birth to their first child, and teaching them how to be moms, is humbling.
She's a mother of two, and says supporting patients giving birth, and sharing her insight as a mother, is her chance to help women as they become mothers for the first time.
"I'm holding this monitor listening to this baby's heart and I'm coaching this woman through her pushing, and I'm in here with her, me," said a proud Kowal Saturday.
"Everybody here...I feel like we're all just honing on these women, and working together to be a big support network for them when they're here because it's so scary and you just feel so overwhelmed and you don't think you can do it," said Kowal.
Kowal says she shares her personal experience with her patients to motivate them - and sometimes those patients are delivering in the same room she did.
