Neighbors want answers for body found in Genesee Valley Park
Rochester, N.Y. - Rochester police are investigating a suspicious death after a burned body was found in Genesee Valley Park early Saturday morning.
The investigation caused part of the park to be shut down part for hours.
While there’s limited information as police continue their investigation, neighbors were shocked to hear the news. Now, they want answers.
Homeowners near Genesee Valley Park watched as the park they walk through every day, became a crime scene.
“I'm just stunned. I'm absolutely stunned,” Sheila Cahill, who lives right by the park, said. “I'm wondering, did it happen in the park? Did it happen someplace else? And it was brought here?”
Rochester police say just before 6:30 Saturday morning, someone called 911 after finding a body behind the tennis courts near a walking trail.
Police tell 13WHAM News the body was burned.
They worked with the Rochester Fire Department to block off the area near the tennis court by the Erie Canal.
“There's always a lot of kids here. It's the park,” Steve Berardi, a little league coach said.
Berardi was supposed to coach a little league team at the park Saturday morning, but cancelled after hearing about the investigation.
“They're playing baseball, they're going on the slide. Parents shouldn't have to worry about their safety,” he added.
Neighbors now hope police can figure out what happened.
“It's a nice street, nice neighbors. I'm just stunned,” Cahill said. “I would feel terrible for whoever’s family this is that has lost somebody."
Police say the investigation is ongoing.
