Police: Convicted felon in Honeoye had storage unit with 20 guns
Honeoye, N.Y. (WHAM) - A convicted felon from Honeoye was arrested Saturday on weapons charges after a search warrant found 20 guns in a storage unit.
Ontario County Sheriff's deputies said John Cheer, Jr., 55, was arrested on weapons charges back in January while he was in custody at the Ontario County Jail.
On January 17, probation officers went to Cheer's house on Deuel Road as part of a court-ordered search after Cheer had violated his probation. During the search, officers found a billy club and several "high-capacity magazines" inside the home.
That search led investigators to evidence that Cheer had more weapons, but not the location of those weapons.
After further investigation, a storage unit in Cheer's name was found.
A search warrant was executed last Friday, leading police to six handguns and 14 rifles and shotguns, as well as various types of ammunition and high capacity magazines. Four of the six handguns were unregistered, and one of the weapons was already loaded. As a convicted felon, Cheer is not legally allowed to possess any firearms.
Cheer's defense attorney made arrangements with the Ontario County Sheriff's Office for Cheer to turn himself in, which he did Saturday morning.
A judge arraigned Cheer on criminal possession of a weapon 2nd and remanded him to the Ontario County Jail on $5,000 cash bail or $10,000 insurance bond.
Cheer posted bail, but was arrested again by Ontario County Sheriff's deputies the same night after probation officers said he had violated the terms of his probation.
