Rochester Police officer hands out candy canes one last time before retiring
Rochester, N.Y. – A tradition for local Amerks fans came to an end Wednesday.
Sgt. Ralph Gagliano is retiring after 42 years, and that means his tradition of passing out candy canes to kids outside the Blue Cross Arena is, too.
He’s been happy to do it for 11 years.
“When the kids are coming across the street, as they see us, especially wearing the Santa hats and me with my Santa beard – thanks to permission from the chief, who allowed me to do this – just to see their faces light up, it really is something,” said Gagliano. “It means a lot to bring a little bit of joy to a young child."
Wednesday was also a first for Sgt. Gagliano. His cousin, who’s also with the Rochester Police Department, joined him for his final candy cane hand-out.
