Police: Steuben County woman stole, forged checks from older man

Avoca, N.Y. (WHAM) - A woman from Avoca was arrested Friday after investigators said she forged checks from a senior citizen's bank account.

State Police said they were notified on January 22 about suspicious activity linked to a bank account that belonged to an elderly man. Investigators looked into the case, analyzed bank records and interviewed several people.

Investigators determined 23-year-old Katherine LaBar-Bulson forged ten separate checks from December 26, 2017 and January 30, 2018.

According to police, LaBar-Bulson was working for the man doing housekeeping and farm-type work and was able to gain access to the checks.

Troopers arrested LaBar-Bulson and charged her with ten felony counts of criminal possession of a forged instrument. She was arrested and remanded to the Steuben County Jail on $100,000 cash bail/$200,000 property bond.

She is scheduled to reappear in town of Avoca Court on February 14.

State Police worked with the Steuben County Adult Protective/Home Care Unit for this investigation.
