Expect to feel punishing cold Friday and Saturday
Western New York is preparing for a period of intense cold, dangerous wind chill temperatures, and locally heavy lake snow. Let's break it down piece by piece.
TIMING: TODAY THROUGH EARLY SUNDAY
Strong WNW winds will create potentially dangerous wind chill that will occasionally drop as low as -25 degrees. A Wind Chill WARNING will be in effect through early Sunday.
SNOW AND LAKE SNOW
TIMING: THROUGH SATURDAY EVENING
A Lake Effect Snow Warning is in effect for Wayne County, where we expect anywhere between 8-16" of snow to fall. Monroe County will also see significant lake snow especially near Route 104. Surrounding counties will be sprayed with occasional snow which may accumulate a few inches during this time.
Even in areas that don't receive much new snow accumulation, blowing and drifting of snow could both be problems in open areas.
RECORD LOW MAXIMUM TEMPERATURE SATURDAY?
The record low MAX temperature for Saturday is 0° set way back in 1896! Rochester may remain sub zero the entire day.
