Renovations coming to the Inn on the Lake in Canandaigua

Changes are coming to The Inn on the Lake in Canandaigua. The venue will be closing for about a year in the fall for the renovations.

The Inn on the Lake typically hosts up to three weddings each weekend in the summer. But this year, folks will have to look elsewhere.

“They have to take the good with the bad. The future of the hotel going forward is what really matters,” said Chris Burns, The Inn On the Lake's managing director.

Burns says the renovations will include a world-class boutique to attract more world travelers. “We're going to be tying in to the wine tourism in the Finger Lakes region and connect ourselves with all the beautiful assets that are available in the Finger Lakes, including Canandaigua Lake," he said.

He says the plans aren't finalized yet, but for the more than 200 employees, there will be plenty work to do - and there could be shifts with employment because it is a seasonal destination.

“We have to empty the hotel of all its contents, and when new furniture comes, I'm going to use that staff to install furniture. I'm going to have a waiter that waits tables, but when we are ready to open, they may be carrying in tables,” said Burns.

Canandaigua Mayor Ellen Polimeni says renovations will benefit the city in the long term

“As they're redesigning this, they'll be able to address things like that and to be sure they make the best use of the footprint of the property,” Polimeni said.

The mayor and Burns expect weddings and other events to go to other local venues. “If we're going to do something special here in Canandaigua, we want to impress everybody, and we're looking forward to future only. We want to make Canandaigua proud.”

The final cost not yet been released. The Inn On the Lake plans to close in the fall of this year and reopen in the summer of 2020.
