Sodus teen dies after stabbing in Newark
NEWARK, N.Y. (WHAM) - A Sodus teen has died after being stabbed in Newark on Friday night.
According to Newark Police, officers responded to a 911 call adjacent to Perkins Park at 10:28 p.m.
Officers found 17-year-old Zackary Dwello unresponsive and lying next to his car. He was suffering from multiple stab wounds and had called 911 to report the stabbing.
Neighbors say the area is usually quiet.
“It's a terrible feeling to know it happened right outside your door and we had no idea until after it was over with,” said neighbor Jon Lanse. “Nothing, not anybody at all heard anything about it. He (Dwello) was able to make the call thank goodness because who knows how long he'd laid there before anyone saw him.”
Dwello was initially transported to Newark-Wayne Community Hospital, but was later air lifted to Strong Memorial Hospital. He died from his injuries at 6 a.m. Saturday morning.
He was a senior at Sodus Central High School.
A memorial consisting of a cross and two candles now sit at the park with Zackary was stabbed late Friday.
Saturday night, 13WHAM spoke with a friend of Zackary's. She says she was supposed to be hanging out with him Friday night.
Friend Jaeda Wright described Zackary as someone who who 'loved his family, being around nature, and loved listening to music.'
"He was just so intelligent and laid back, and everybody felt so comfortable with him," said Jaeda. "My heart just breaks for his family, he has a great family, and we're all going to miss him a lot."
Police say the stabbing is unrelated to an armed robbery that happened at Crosby's Convenience Store on North Main Street in Newark Friday night.
It is unclear why Dwello was in the area of Perkins Park on Friday night.
A joint investigation with the New York State Police and the Newark Police Department is ongoing.
Dwello's death comes two months after fellow senior Allysa Taft was fatally stabbed. Her ex-boyfriend was charged in her death.
