14-year-old girl dies after being hit by vehicle in Geneseo
Geneseo, N.Y. - A teenager has died after being hit by a vehicle in Geneseo Thursday.
According to Livingston County Sheriff's deputies, the 14-year-old victim was hit on Route 39 near Nations Road.
The Geneseo Central School District confirms the victim was a ninth grader in the district. Her identity is not being released at this time.
Deputies say one vehicle was involved in the crash. Livingston County Sheriff Tom Dougherty said investigators are speaking with the driver, but added there does not appear to be anything suspicious and that this was, "a horrible, horrible accident."
Investigators say the student was running with a friend at the time she was hit. They say the friend was not hurt.
The road was closed for several hours but has since reopened.
Geneseo School District Superintendent Tim Hayes released a statement Thursday night.
Many of you may already be aware of the accident that occurred this afternoon that took the life of one of our high school students. Words cannot express our sorrow for this loss. I want our school families to know that our staff will be meeting prior to the start of the school day tomorrow to prepare for the arrival of our students. When our students arrive, counselors will be on hand to support them in any way that is needed. Specific directions will be given to our MS/HS students regarding accessing support throughout the school day and all of our staff members will observe all of our students closely to insure that they are receiving needed support. If you have specific concerns about your child, please contact his or her counselor or principal directly to insure that your concerns are conveyed to the appropriate staff members. Your support during this difficult time is greatly appreciated.
