Tuesday marks beginning of Kwanzaa
Rochester, N.Y. – Tuesday marked the first day of Kwanzaa.
Tuesday, many people gathered at the Baobob Cultural Center in Rochester to mark the start of the celebration.
Kwanzaa is a celebration of African-American culture that lasts seven days and touches on themes like self-determination, faith and unity – which was Tuesday’s theme.
“It’s to reaffirm during this time, what we practice throughout the year. And it’s a time to reestablish those commitments for the new year,” said Jennifer Jones-Effah.
“All of the fruits of our labor, Kwanzaa is an opportunity to celebrate all of that,” said Jerome Underwood.
The Rochester Kwanzaa Coalition is holding celebrations throughout the week at different locations.
