Cuomo presses lawmakers to ban gun purchases for mentally ill
Albany, N.Y. (WHAM) - Governor Andrew Cuomo said Monady it is time to ban gun purchases for mentally ill people.
Governor Cuomo said New York added the provision in the SAFE Act and the federal government should follow suit.
The Democratic governor pressed lawmakers, alongside Senator Chuck Schumer, on the issue after the mass shooting at a church in Texas on Sunday. Authorities say 26 people were killed and 20 others injured in the shooting.
"We have banned purchases by mentally ill people," Gov. Cuomo said. "Which is what the president says the problem is. Fine, then do what we did in New York. We don't need the thoughts and prayers of Congresspeople; we need action."
New York's SAFE Act was signed by Gov. Cuomo in 2013.
