Tech company Datto to add 200 jobs in Rochester
Rochester, N.Y. (WHAM) - A tech firm expanding in Rochester will add as many as 200 new jobs, according to Governor Cuomo.
The governor was in Rochester Tuesday to praise Datto Inc. as it moves into new office space in the Metropolitan Building in downtown Rochester.
Datto developed technology that helps companies with backup and disaster recovery services. They have offices in several states and are headquartered in downtown Rochester.
In Rochester Tuesday, Governor Andrew Cuomo called the company a success story and said they proved they could create jobs and successful products.
“Datto has already experienced a great deal of success in its first few years in New York and with this expansion, the company is poised to play a key role in bolstering the new Rochester Downtown Innovation Zone as well as helping the larger Finger Lakes economy reach new heights,” Governor Cuomo said.
Datto was founded in 2007 by RIT graduate Austin McChord. It originally committed to creating 77 jobs in Rochester within five years in 2014.
By the end last year, Datto had created nearly 150 jobs. Technical Recruiter Michelle Gallagher said they are looking to hire software engineers, tech support and managers to fill the new openings.
The move into the Metropolitan Building is being assisted by a $2.1 million capital grant through the Upstate Revitalization Initiative.
Heidi Zimmer-Meyer of the Downtown Development Corporation said Datto is part of an exciting development zone in Rochester known as the innovation zone.
She said the Metropolitan Building, where the company will move into, is in the center of an area exploding with technology and development.
Zimmer-Meyer also said a new development project is planned for the Main and Clinton area, but it hasn't been announced yet. She wouldn't say what it was or name the developer but said it should happen soon.
If all 200 positions are added, Datto will employ 350 people.
"Giving back to Rochester has been a goal of mine since Datto's early beginnings, and we strive to be a top employer in the city," McChord said.
His employees credit McChord's passion and drive for the high tech company's success.
