Whooping cough confirmed at Penfield High School
Penfield, N.Y. – Penfield High School says it has confirmed a case of whooping cough after being notified by the Monroe County Health Department.
The district did not say if it was a student, teacher or staff member who had become ill, but says it expects more cases to arise.
A letter went home Thursday to parents.
Whooping cough, or Pertussis, is a highly contagious respiratory disease.
Early symptoms are similar to a common cold and include runny nose, fever, coughing and trouble breathing.
If the cough persists or becomes worse over three weeks, experts recommend seeing a doctor immediately.
