Lancers lose another heartbreaker, 11-9 in Missouri - 01/06/14
(Independence, MO) " The Rochester Lancers (3-8) lost an overtime thriller on the road to the Missouri Comets (6-3) by a score of 11-9. The Lancers were led offensively by Elliot Fauske and Bato who each had a three point night. Gavin McInerney made 21 saves in goal for the Lancers. The Lancers will finish their road trip next Saturday night in Milwaukee against the Wave.
Through fifteen minutes of the play, the game remained scoreless as McInerney made five saves and his counterpart Danny Waltman one upped him with six saves.
It would take until almost eight minutes into the second quarter before Doug Miller would finish a rebound of a Bato shot to break the scoreless tie. With just over three minutes to go in the half and the Lancers on the powerplay, Fauskes shot from beyond the 3-point arc would deflect off a Comets defender and into the goal. Less than ninety seconds later, the Comets would get a 3-point powerplay goal of their own when MISL leading scorer Vahid Assadpour beat McInerney from long range. The Lancers would answer back with less than a minute left in the half when Joey Tavernese slammed the ball off the end boards and it found Gary Boughton who finished it one time to give the Lancers a 7-3 halftime lead.
The Comets would coming roaring out of the locker room getting goals from Bryan Perez and Alex Megson in the first two minutes of the third quarter to tie the game. The Lancers would retake the lead with their second powerplay goal of the game when Bato cleaned up a rebound of a Jake Schindler shot. With just under two minutes left in the third quarter, Coady Andrews stepped into one from just inside the 3-point arc to level the game at 9-9 after three quarters of play.
Neither team could break the tie in the fourth quarter sending the match into overtime. Less than a minute into overtime, the Comets would get a restart goal when John Sosa set up Assadpour for the tap in goal.
The Lancers return to MISL play on Saturday January 11th when they travel to U.S. Cellular Arena to face the Milwaukee Wave at 7 pm. The Lancers will return home to the Blue Cross Arena on Friday, January 17th when they host the Syracuse Silver Knights at 7 pm.
