Rhinos top Antigua 1-0

ROCHESTER, NY - The Rochester Rhinos defeated the Antigua Barracuda FC 1-0 Sunday, July 28th at Sahlen’s Stadium in Rochester, NY in front of a crowd of 6,849. Following the shutout, the Rhinos are now undefeated in their last 10 home matches.
Defender Danny Earls scored the game’s winning goal after 88 minutes of play and with the 1-0 shutout, Rochester goal keeper Kristian Nicht had his his third consecutive shutout and eighth clean sheet of the season. At the end of the match Nicht moved into the USLPRO lead with eight shutouts.
Rochester had an opportunity to take the lead in just the second minute of play with a shot by midfielder Rudolph Mayard. Mayard took the first shot of the game for the Rhinos from 18 yards out at the right side of the field, but it hit the crossbar and deflected over the net before it could go in.
In the 29th minute, the Rhinos had another close opportunity to take the lead off of a header by defender Bilal Duckett. Defender Danny Earls served a corner kick to Duckett in front of the goal and Duckett headed the ball, but drove it up and over the crossbar.
Antigua had its closest opportunity for a goal in the 68th minute. Forward Tamorley Thomas dribbled the ball up the right side of the field for the Barracuda and took a shot from above the penalty box. The ball looked as if it was going in, but veered to the right of the goal. Four minutes later Thomas got in behind the Rhinos back four again. This time he tried to chip Nicht, but the Rhinos 6'4” goalkeeper was up to the task and made the save.
In the 80th minute, Earls took a direct kick for the Rhinos and played the ball to defender George Kyriazis in front of the goal for another very close shot at a goal for the Rhinos. However, after finding Kyriazis’ foot, the ball hit the crossbar yet again.
With only two minutes left in the game, Earls scored the game winning goal for Rochester. Forward Tam McManus challanged for a header from just inside the left side of the six-yard box that went backwards, and found Earls, who volleyed the ball and shot it into the right side of net.
With the 1:0 win, Rochester receives three points and moves into a 10th place tie with Phoenix FC in the USLPRO standings. The Rhinos are eight points out of the eighth and final playoff spot with only four matches left to play.
