Samantha Miles is thrilled to join the 13WHAM ABC Rochester team! She comes from an NBC affiliate in Corpus Christi, Texas where she served as the breaking news reporter and fill-in anchor on the morning show and then hit the streets to cover stories for the evening newscasts.
Samantha earned her Master’s degree from Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. In New York City, she reported stories ranging from how ISIS recruits young people, to the rising number of shootings in New York City. Samantha also reported for Indian Country Today Media Network in NYC covering stories on issues impacting Native Americans.
Before reporting in New York, she earned her bachelor’s degree in Communications and Political Science from the University of Colorado, Denver - which is also her hometown.
Her passion for journalism started in high school. Samantha became obsessed with journalism when she watched coverage of 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina. While she started following news, she also started volunteering at a women’s halfway home, where she styled the women’s hair for fun, while she would listen to their life stories. It was these conversations, some inspiring, some shocking, some heartbreaking, that made her passionate about storytelling, and learning something new every day.
She went on to get her cosmetology license in high school, a trade that helped her get through college. During college, she was also a tutor at the Denver Women’s Correctional Facility. She edited “Captured Words, Free Thoughts,” a compilation of inmate essays and poetry that was published by the University of Colorado-Denver. She wrapped up her Bachelor’s degree studying at the School for International Training in Tunisia and Morocco helping to cover the Arab Spring protests.
It was these experiences that made her determined to go after journalism, taking her passion for people and storytelling to become a full-time reporter.
In her free time, Samantha writes articles on women in business and innovation. When she’s not reporting, she’s working out, dancing salsa, or exploring Rochester!
She is also member of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists, the Arab and Middle Eastern Journalists Association, Society of Professional Journalists, and Women in Media.
