Mayor-elect plans to make changes to RPD
Rochester, N.Y. - Incoming mayor Lovely Warren plans to make changes to the Rochester Police Department.
Warren hopes her plans of adding more police sections and a shift in officer's hours will help combat crime.
Its unfortunate and its sad but a lot of times people dont recognize just how bad it is for people in our city, said Warren. Thats why for me understanding who you represent the good, the bad, and the ugly is so very important for how were moving this community forward.
Currently there are two police sections in the city.
Warren wants to increase that to four sections.
City council has already passed in the budget to see how this transition would work, according to Warren.
Having more sections will allow officers to answer lower priority calls quicker, said Warren.
Warren also wants to change shifts to 12 hour days, to save money and give officers more down time.
I think that it gives our officers down time, working three days on four days off gives them time to spend time with their family and be a support at home, said Warren. I think that looking at it from a budgetary stand point the state police did that as well as the city of Ithaca and they were able to save significant dollars, but just not about the savings but I think it really gives people time to come down.
Warren plans to sit down with mayor Tom Richards next Wednesday to talk about the transition.
