This ice won't melt

Rochester, N.Y.---Balmy temperatures felt in Rochester have all but melted away snow and ice with the exception of the frozen sheet at Frontier Field.

Whenever the warmer weather comes we can turn our refrigeration unit down to get the ice to be 18 degrees, said Dave Fies, Vice President of Operations for Rink Specialists.

Monroe Countys minor league baseball stadium is buzzing with activity with builders prepping a temporary rink that will be used for a game next Friday.

The ice surface is going to be close to done within the next day or two, its just the smaller auxiliary things outside of the ice rink that we'll still be working on, added Fies.

Temperatures rose above 60 degrees which made it difficult for Rink Specialists to add the lines to the rink surface. The goal lines, circles, blue and red lines are made up of a paper and cloth mesh, not painted the way they are done in cooled ice rinks.

Frontiers  new rink is kept around 18 degrees with the use of a refrigerant known  as propylene glycol which is carried from a refrigeration unit in right field to the end of the rink.

Twelve miles of tubing run up and down the length of the ice and allow it to remain frozen.

The only major problem would be if temperatures drop into single digits, according to Fies.

It breaks up in big chunks the ice becomes very brittle so it breaks up in chunks.
