Rochester's first homicide of 2014

Rochester, N.Y. Just hours into the new year, two men were shot at a house party on the west side of the city.

One of the men has been released from the hospital; the other died and his death became the first homicide investigation of 2014 for the Rochester Police Department.

I turned on the news this morning and I heard first homicide of the year and it was Lois Street and the pictures were of my building, says Melvin Russell, the buildings landlord.

According to police, the shooting happened inside 585 Records, a recording studio, on the second floor.

Sometime after New Years someone somehow got into the building and just started shooting, says Russell. He didnt give me any reason why this would happen so I really dont know.

The building also houses four other businesses, including two churches. All of them empty at the time of the shooting.

Seven hours later, as the medical examiner arrived to remove the body of the years first homicide victim, police technicians dusted an SUV outside looking for prints of the person responsible.

The 23-year-old victim's name will not be released until his family is notified.

A Rochester Police Officer, Captain John Corbelli, repsoding to the scene was involved in a minor crash. His vhicle hit another. Corbelli was taken to the hospital with minor injuries and has since been released.
